Exam tips, study strategy and updates, written for people preparing for the EPA 608 exam.
EPA 608 Universal is a credential that unlocks higher-paying HVAC jobs and refrigerant-handling roles. Here is the 5-year career trajectory and the adjacent certs that compound your earnings.
EPA 608 rules vary by certifying organization. Here is what to confirm before exam day, what the exam format looks like, and how to prepare without relying on reference materials.
EPA 608 certification correlates with a 5-12% wage premium over uncertified HVAC technicians. Here is how to negotiate that premium using BLS OEWS May 2024 HVAC mechanic wage data.
The EPA 608 exam covers a lot of regulatory detail you need to know cold. Here is the realistic timeline for each certification type (I, II, III, Universal) and the practice thresholds that predict passing.
A2L mildly flammable refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B are replacing R-410A. Here is how the safety classification changes what technicians do on the job.
Reclaimed refrigerant must meet AHRI 700 purity limits before it can be resold. Here are the contaminant thresholds, the testing methods, and the exam's favorite questions.
Charging by weight is the factory method for accuracy. Subcooling is the field method for verification. Both have a place — and the exam tests whether you know which.
Refrigerant cylinders are pressure vessels. DOT specifications, overfill limits, valve handling, and storage rules apply — and they appear on the Universal 608 exam.
The Universal certification covers Type I, II, and III. Here is the exam structure, the topics, study strategies, and what the credential unlocks for your career.
Refrigerant violations have cost companies millions. Here are three real enforcement cases that show what the EPA considers serious, and what technicians can learn from them.
The 500-micron standing vacuum test is the EPA-recognized standard for moisture removal. The 200-micron target is a manufacturer-level deep evacuation. Here is the difference.
Every refrigerant cylinder has a hydrostatic test stamp. Learn to read it, calculate whether the cylinder is in test, and know what to do when it expires.
If you service a commercial system with 50 or more pounds of charge, you must calculate the leak rate and follow repair timelines. Here is the formula and the thresholds.
You can clean refrigerant on-site with a recycling machine, but only AHRI 700 reclaimed refrigerant can be sold. Here is the legal boundary and what the exam expects.
R-22 production ended in 2020. Recovered and reclaimed R-22 is still legal to service existing equipment, but the long-term answer is a replacement. Here are the options.
R-410A is a high-pressure HFC blend with a glide. Here is the correct procedure for recovery under EPA Section 608, including cylinder selection and liquid push.
Electronic detectors, soap-bubble checks, dye injection, and ultrasonic location — choosing the right method for the refrigerant and the leak size.
Both EPA sections govern refrigerants, but they cover different equipment, different technicians, and different sales restrictions. Here is how to keep them straight.
Triple evacuation breaks the moisture boil-out cycle that defeats a single evacuation. Here is the procedure, when it applies, and what the exam expects you to know.
A technician-friendly breakdown of the federal regulation that governs refrigerant management, recovery, and technician certification under Section 608.
